Dr. Wolfgang Heubisch visits the technology company Blackbird Robotersysteme

The Minister of State for Science comes to Garching

The State Minister for Science, Research and Art, Dr. Wolfgang Heubisch, visited Blackbird Robotersysteme GmbH in Garching near Munich in April 2013. Blackbird develops control systems for robotic laser welding. These systems allow for highly efficient laser welding processes and are used, for example, in the automotive industry to build vehicle bodies.

The company was formed in 2008 through the Institute for Machine Tools and Industrial Management (iwb) of the Technische Universität München. During the early phase of the company's development starting in 2009, the two founders Dr.-Ing Ulrich Munzert and Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang Vogl where funded by the "Förderprogramm zum leichteren Übergang in eine Gründerexistenz (FLÜGGE)" (a program by the State of Bavaria to support people founding new companies). In the years since then, the company was able to relatively quickly establish its control system solutions around the world at leading manufacturers in the automotive industry and other manufacturing industries.

During the visit, the Minister informed himself about the experiences of the founders and learned about ways in which the framework conditions for young technology companies in Munich could still be improved. Last but not least, he was able to gain an impression of the positive developments in the company over the last five years and see the robotic welding systems in operation in the in-house laser laboratory.
